This book introduces the Australian frog fauna and includes a painting of, and distribution maps for, each of the 213 species and 5 sub-species of Australian frogs currently recognised in 2003, mostly based on Dr. H.G. Coggers taxonomy. More than 110 new species of Australian frogs have been discovered and described since 1960. The five Families of frogs found within Australia are dealt with, followed by details of the Genera within each of the Families. The individual species are arranged in alphabetical order using their common name. However, a Quickfind index is provided at the front of the book to enable those familiar with scientific names to go directly to any Family, Genus or specific species. The text on each species has clear, precise information. The information in this book is presented in such a way, so as to make of value to readers from the layperson, naturalist through to the scientist - indeed, anyone who may have an interest in learning more about the Frogs of Australia. This book provides a brief description of the ecology and natural history of sixteen amphibians, eight snakes and lizards and the Chelonia species found in the temperate climatic region of Europe (North-west Europe). The book commences with an introduction to the biology of amphibians and reptiles and describes the differences between the main groups. The main ecological adaptations are discussed and there is particular mention that it is erroneous to refer to amphibians and reptiles as cold blooded. There is also the suggestion that the colour of an amphibian or reptile may not necessarily mean anything in terms of the animal's thermal properties. For each species there is a brief account of the following: the etymology or origin of the name of the species, reference to early accounts of the species, taxonomy, protection, general description, distribution and habitat, seasonal movements and behaviour, vagility and population ecology, feeding ecology, thermal ecology, reproduction, growth and development.

Wenn in lauen Frühjahrs- und Sommernächten lautstarke Froschkonzerte aus Teichen, Weihern und Seen erschallen, ist Paarungszeit der Wasserfrösche. Über viele Jahrzehnte galt der Wasserfrosch als gut erforscht, nicht zuletzt weil er weltweit Generationen von Medizin- und Biologiestudenten als Studienobjekt diente. Doch erst Mitte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts offenbarten sich die bis dahin gut gewahrten Geheimnisse der Grünfrösche, wie Wasserfrösche im Volksmund oft auch genannt werden. Am Ausgangspunkt des großen Interesses an der Erforschung dieser Tiergruppe stand die Entdeckung, dass der in Mitteleuropa weit verbreitete Teichfrosch ein Hybrid ist, der auf Kreuzungen zwischen Kleinem Wasserfrosch und Seefrosch zurückgeht. Die eigentliche Sensation war jedoch die Aufklärung der Vererbungs- und Reproduktionsmodi dieser Hybridform, die innerhalb der Wirbeltiere einmalig sind und den europäischen Wasserfroschkomplex als evolutionsbiologischen Sonderfall charakterisieren. Der Autor, der sich seit ca. 20 Jahren intensiv mit Wasserfröschen beschäftigt, fasst in der vorliegenden Monografie den aktuellen Wissensstand auf den Gebieten der Systematik und Populationsgenetik des westpaläarktischen Wasserfroschkomplexes zusammen. Von allen bisher bekannt gewordenen Arten und genetisch differenzierbaren Formen werden die charakteristischen Merkmale, die Verbreitung sowie Ökologie und Verhalten vorgestellt und neue Hypothesen zu ihren verwandtschaftlichen Beziehungen diskutiert. Besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf die Darstellung der Vererbungsmodi hybridogenetischer Hybridformen und der Populationsgenetik der mitteleuropäischen Wasserfrösche des sogenannten R. esculenta-Komplexes gelegt. Ein weiterer Themenbereich befasst sich mit der Gefährdung und dem Schutz von Wasserfröschen, die noch immer zu den Stiefkindern der Naturschützer zählen. An vielen Stellen flossen noch unveröffentlichte Daten und Beobachtungen in die Abhandlungen ein. Dadurch, aber auch durch die Hinweise auf offene oder nicht vollständig geklärte Fragen, ist diese Monografie für einen breiten Leserkreis, vom Feldherpetologen über den Naturschützer und Biologiestudenten bis hin zum Wissenschaftler von Interesse und regt zu weiteren Untersuchungen an.

It portrays about 165 taxa and forms of the families Elapidae and Viperidae, and covers a geographical range from Pakistan to China and from Japan to Indonesia. Каждая книга серии «Книга о...» написана экспертом в своей области и содержит около 600 фотографий видов, а также информацию об ареале распространении и статусе охраны, а также различные небольшие заметки, представляющие научный и исторический интерес. Последняя сводка по ядовитым животным и растениям вышла в 1990. Хотя она и была издана большим тиражом (230 000 экз.), но практически сразу стала библиографической редкостью. Сейчас она доступна в Интернете и по-прежнему пользуется большим спросом. За прошедшие 30 лет появились новые данные о биологии и экологии ядовитых животных и растений, а также продуцируемых ими ядах. Поэтому, структура и материалы, использованные в новой монографии, подверглись коренной переработке и дополнению, что привело к увеличению объема книги почти в четыре раза. На данный момент, в ней отражено современное состояние вопроса о ядовитых животных и растениях, описано строение их ядопродуцирующих органов и тканей, приведены химическая структура зоо- и фитотоксинов и молекулярные механизмы их поражающего действия. Большое внимание уделяется профилактике отравлений и мерам оказания первой помощи. Важное значение придается охране и рациональному использованию ядовитых животных и растений в нашей стране. Приведены сведения о практическом применении зоо- и фитотоксинов и препаратов на их основе в медицине.

Один из определителей по рептилиям встречающихся на территории Омана (государство на Аравийском полуострове), а второй по амфибиям и рептилиям Новой Зеландии, куда мечтает попасть каждый герпетолог.

Snakes of the World: A Catalogue of Living and Extinct Species, published in 2014, was the first catalogue of its kind and covered all living and fossil snakes described between 1758 and 2012. This new volume will be a supplement to this important herpetological reference and will include new published data on snakes named and recognized since 2012.
